A villa area, so mostly dogs and garden cats

Nad Al Sheba is villas with walled gardens. The animals are larger than the Dubai average. Huskies, German shepherds, salukis and retrievers are common. So are cats that spend half the day in the garden. Houses with 3 or more animals are not unusual.

That changes what owners ask for. Dog vaccination and tick control come first, then skin and ear problems, then lameness. A limping large dog often needs an x-ray under sedation, which we do in the clinic the same day when the dog has fasted.

For a household with several animals, a home visit is often easier than 3 car trips. The vet vaccinates and examines each animal in your own majlis or garden. Anything that needs imaging or an anaesthetic is then booked at the clinic, with a written estimate first.

Living with pets in Nad Al Sheba

Garden dogs and heatstroke

A husky left in a shaded garden at 2 PM in August can overheat in under 30 minutes. Heavy panting, thick drool and wobbling are the warning signs. Move the dog inside, wet it with cool water, not ice, and call us from the car.

Ticks are a year-round problem

The brown dog tick lives in garden walls and kennels across Dubai. It carries tick fever, which shows as tiredness, fever and nosebleeds. Dogs that sleep outside need tick prevention every month of the year. The vet advises which product suits your dog's weight.

Cycle track walks

Walk before 7 AM or after sunset from May to October. Press the back of your hand on the ground for 5 seconds. If you cannot hold it there, the surface will burn pads. Carry water for the dog, not only for yourself.

Cats that go over the wall

Garden cats fight with community cats, usually at night. A bite closes over and becomes an abscess 2 to 4 days later. A soft swelling and a cat that stops eating should be seen the same day. Neutering reduces roaming and fighting.

Salukis and sight hounds

Salukis have very little body fat, and this affects how they handle some anaesthetic drugs. Tell us the breed when you book any procedure. The vet plans the anaesthetic around it, and a nurse monitors the dog until it is standing.

Ramadan and late evenings

My dog has ticks again. Should I bring him in or treat the garden?

Both. Bring the dog in so the vet can remove the ticks, check his gums and temperature, and decide whether a blood test for tick fever is needed. The garden, kennel and wall cracks also need treating by a pest control company. Otherwise the ticks are back within weeks.

Is there a closer vet to Nad Al Sheba than Ras Al Khor?
