Castration and spay are done in the clinic's own theatre. A nurse watches heart rate, breathing and oxygen from the first injection until your cat lifts her head.

02Overview
What the operation is, and what it changes
Neutering removes the testicles of a male cat through two small cuts that usually need no stitches. Spaying removes the ovaries and uterus of a female through one cut on the belly or the flank, closed with stitches under the skin. The male operation takes about 15 minutes of surgery. The female takes 30 to 45.
A neutered male stops spraying in about nine cases out of ten if it is done before the habit sets in. He roams less and fights less, which is how most abscesses and FIV infections start. A spayed female stops calling every three weeks, cannot get pregnant, and is protected from pyometra, a womb infection that needs emergency surgery.
Your cat is examined on the morning of the operation. If the vet hears a heart murmur or finds a fever, the operation is moved and you pay only for the consultation. For cats over seven, or any cat that has been unwell, we advise a blood test first. It is run in our own lab and the result is ready before the anaesthetic.

- Spaying a cat in heat or pregnantBoth are done. The operation takes longer, so the price can change, and you are told before we begin. The FAQ below says when it is better to wait.
- Retained testicle (cryptorchid) surgeryWhen one or both testicles stay in the abdomen, the operation is abdominal and is quoted after the exam. A retained testicle left in place has a higher chance of turning into a tumour later.
- Trap neuter return for street catsWe neuter community cats brought in by their feeders. Tell us it is a street cat when you book, and ask about ear-tipping while the cat is asleep.
- Microchip under the same anaestheticPlaced while your cat is asleep. Dubai Municipality registration needs the chip number and a rabies vaccine that is in date, see cat vaccination.
- Pre-anaesthetic blood testAdvised for cats over 7 and any cat that has been unwell. A small sample, run in the in-house lab the same morning.
- Recheck and stitch removalIncluded in the price. Females come back at day 10. A cat not eating after spay surgery by day 2 is a same-day call, not a wait for the recheck.

Times are confirmed when you book. This is the usual order.

The night before
From 10 PMNo food after your cat’s evening meal. Water stays down. Kittens under four months fast for a shorter time, so tell us the age when you book.

MorningYou sign the consent form and give us a number that you will answer. The vet examines your cat and weighs it. This is the moment to mention any vomiting, coughing or medication.

Anaesthetic and surgery
A nurse stays with your cat from the first injection until it can lift its head. Heart rate, breathing and oxygen are watched the whole time.

Recovery
Your cat wakes up in a warm, quiet kennel. We call or message you when it is awake. Most cats are sitting up within an hour.

AfternoonA nurse shows you the wound and explains feeding for the first night. You leave with written instructions and the date of the recheck.

Things that are different in Dubai
Cats breed all year here
There is no cold season to pause the cycle. An unspayed female can come into heat every three weeks, in any month, from about five months old.
The drive home in summer
A cat coming round from an anaesthetic cannot control its temperature well. Cool the car before you carry the box out. Do not leave the carrier on a hot seat.
Balconies and open windows
A cat in heat will go through a gap it normally ignores. Most falls from flats we see involve unneutered cats. Keep windows on the latch until the operation is done.
Street cats you are feeding
We neuter community cats brought in by their feeders. Tell us it is a street cat when you book, because it changes how we handle the carrier and the recovery.
Microchip at the same time
If your cat is not chipped, it can be done while it is asleep. Dubai Municipality registration needs a chip number.
Evening pick-up
The clinic is open until 12 AM, so you can collect after work. Tell us in the morning if you will be later than 6 PM.

08Afterwards
The first ten days at home
Give half the normal meal on the first evening. Anaesthetic can make cats sick if they eat a full bowl. Normal food starts the next morning.
Males are usually themselves in two days. Females need ten quiet days while the muscle layer heals. That means no jumping onto the wardrobe and no going outside.
- Keep the collar or suit on. Thirty seconds of licking can open a wound
- Use paper litter or shredded newspaper for five days so grit stays out of the cut
- Look at the wound twice a day. A thin dry line is what you want
- Keep other pets apart for the first night
- Come back for the recheck even if everything looks fine
