Surgery theatre in the building
Wound repair, lump removal, bladder stones, caesareans and abdominal surgery are done in the clinic's own theatre. An operation that cannot wait is done the same day.
Blood test the same morning
The pre-anaesthetic panel runs in our own lab before the first injection. If the kidneys or liver look wrong, the plan changes before the anaesthetic, not after.
A nurse on the monitor throughout
Advanced veterinary surgery is only as safe as the person watching the numbers. A nurse tracks heart rate, breathing, oxygen and temperature from induction until your animal is standing.

02Overview
What soft-tissue surgery covers
Soft-tissue surgery covers skin, muscle and the organs of the chest and abdomen. The operations we see most are wound and abscess repair, lump removal, bladder stone removal, hernia repair, caesareans and surgery for an infected womb. We also remove swallowed objects from the stomach or intestine. Bones and joints are a separate service, described on the orthopedics page.
The vet wants to know two things before cutting: what is inside, and whether the body can handle an anaesthetic. Blood is run in our own lab the same morning. X-ray or ultrasound shows the size and position of a stone, a mass or an object. The written estimate then lists the surgery, the anaesthetic, any nights in the ward and the medication.
Anaesthetic deaths in healthy cats and dogs are rare, in the region of 1 in 1,000. The risk rises with age, illness and emergency surgery, which is why the blood test comes first. A nurse watches heart rate, breathing, oxygen and temperature from the first injection until your animal is standing. A few operations need a specialist hospital. If yours is one, the vet says so at the examination and refers you.
03What it covers
Operations done in the clinic
Dog surgery and cat surgery cover very different operations. These are the ones done at the clinic, and what each involves.
- Wound repair and stitchingBite wounds, cuts from glass or fencing and torn pads. A fresh wound is cleaned and closed under sedation or a short anaesthetic the same day. An older wound is flushed and often left to drain first.
- Abscess drainage in catsCat-fight abscesses on the face, tail base and legs. The abscess is opened, flushed and sometimes fitted with a drain. Most cats eat again the next day.
- Lump removal and biopsyA needle sample first, then removal if the lump is growing, firm or ulcerated. The tissue can go to a pathologist, and the estimate says if that is advised.
- Bladder stone removalStones found on x-ray or ultrasound are taken out through the bladder wall. The stone is sent for analysis so the diet can stop the next one. Read about bladder stones.
- Swallowed objectsSocks, date stones, hair ties and toys removed from the stomach or intestine. Vomiting that will not stop is the usual sign. See swallowed foreign objects.
- Pyometra, the infected wombAn unspayed female drinking a lot, off her food and with a discharge, usually a month after a heat. She is operated on the day it is found. Read about pyometra.
- Caesarean sectionFor a cat or dog straining without a birth. When all is well, the mother usually goes home with her kittens or puppies the same day.
- Hernia repairUmbilical hernias in puppies and kittens, often closed at the same time as neutering. A hernia after an accident is checked with ultrasound first.

Examination and estimate
The vet examines your animal, orders the tests that are needed and explains the operation. You leave with a written estimate and a surgery date, or you stay if it cannot wait.

The night before
From 10 PMNo food after the evening meal. Water stays down until you leave home. Puppies, kittens and diabetic animals fast differently, so ask when you book.

Drop-off
MorningYou sign the consent form and leave a number you will answer. Mention any medication, vomiting or coughing in the last week.

Anaesthetic and surgery
The surgical site is clipped and scrubbed. A nurse stays on monitoring for the whole operation. Tissue that is removed can be sent for analysis, and the estimate says if that is advised.

Recovery
Your animal wakes in a warm kennel with pain relief already given. We call you when he is awake and tell you how it went.

Pick-up or ward
Same evening, or after 1 to 3 nightsSmall operations go home the same day. Abdominal surgery usually means time in the inpatient ward. A nurse shows you the wound and gives written instructions.

Humidity under a bandage
From June to September a dressing turns damp within hours outdoors, and damp skin breaks down. Keep your animal in air conditioning and come for bandage checks every 2 to 3 days.
Cat-fight abscesses
Outdoor and community cats fight over territory all year. A bite seals over, and the swelling appears 2 to 4 days later. It is opened and flushed under sedation, and the cat usually eats again the next day.
What gets swallowed here
Date stones, corn cobs, barbecue bones, hair ties and small toys are the usual finds. A date stone is the right size to block the intestine of a small dog.
The drive home
An animal coming round from an anaesthetic cannot control its temperature. Cool the car before you carry him out, and keep the carrier off a hot seat.
Sand and sea
No beach and no desert walks until the stitches are out. Sand works under a dressing in minutes, and sea water softens a healing wound.
Evening pick-up
The clinic is open until 12 AM, so you can collect after work. Tell us in the morning roughly when you will come.

Most wounds heal without trouble. These signs mean the vet should look today.

- Gums that look white or grey instead of pink
- Vomiting more than twice, or a belly that looks swollen
- No food eaten 24 hours after coming home
- A wound that gapes, smells, or is hot and getting redder
- Stitches pulled out, or a collar your animal has got past
08Afterwards
The first 2 weeks at home
Give half a normal meal on the first evening and go back to normal food the next morning. Skin takes 10 to 14 days to heal. The muscle layer under an abdominal wound takes longer, so the rest period matters even when the skin looks closed.
Give every dose of the medication you were sent home with, at the times written on the label. If a dose makes your animal sick, phone before you give the next one. A cat not eating after surgery for more than 24 hours needs a call, not more time.
- Keep the collar or body suit on day and night. A wound can be licked open in under a minute
- Lead walks only for dogs, and one quiet room for cats, until the recheck
- Look at the wound twice a day in good light. A thin dry line is what you want
- Keep the wound dry. No baths and no swimming until the vet clears it
- Come to the recheck even if everything looks fine
