Why have the PCR test done here
Veterinary PCR testing in the UAE is ordered most for tick fever, cat flu and parvovirus. Here the swab is taken by the vet who examined your animal, and treatment starts before the result is back.
The vet picks the panel, not a menu
A single-organism test costs less than a 6 or 8 organism panel. After the examination the vet orders the panel that will change the treatment, and you see the cost in writing first.
A blood count run alongside
The PCR result is read with a blood count from the in-house laboratory. Low platelets with a positive Ehrlichia PCR is a diagnosis. Either one alone is a question.
An isolation ward for infectious cases

02Overview
When a PCR test is worth doing
PCR copies a short stretch of genetic material until there is enough to detect. That makes it far more sensitive than a rapid kit, and it names the organism. The vet orders it when the answer changes the treatment, the isolation plan or the advice for other animals in the home. It supports the routine work of our laboratory and does not replace it.
In cats the common panels cover cat flu that will not clear, which means herpesvirus, calicivirus, Chlamydia and Mycoplasma. Others cover diarrhoea, including panleukopenia, Giardia and Tritrichomonas, and FeLV. In dogs the main uses are parvovirus, kennel cough organisms and the tick-borne infections Ehrlichia, Babesia and Anaplasma. Most of the viruses on these lists are prevented by routine cat vaccination and dog vaccination.
A PCR result has limits, and the vet reads it with the examination and the blood results. A positive can mean a healthy carrier. A live vaccine given in the last few weeks can also turn the test positive. A negative does not rule the infection out if the organism is shed on and off or the sample was taken late. An animal that may be infectious stays in the isolation ward, away from other patients, if it has to be admitted.

The brown dog tick lives in kennels, villa gardens and cracks in walls, and the warm climate keeps it active all year. Ehrlichia is the infection it spreads most. Fever, nosebleeds and a low platelet count are the usual signs.
