The same visit gives blood results from the in-house lab and the ultrasound images. Kidney values and the kidney scan are read side by side.

02Overview
What each scan shows
An x-ray is a still picture that is best for bone, the chest and anything dense. It shows fractures and joint changes, which is why orthopedic cases start here. It shows heart size, fluid or air around the lungs, most bladder stones, and metal, stone or bone that has been swallowed. It can count puppies or kittens from about day 45 of pregnancy.
Ultrasound is a moving picture of soft organs. The vet looks at the liver, spleen, kidneys, bladder wall, the layers of the intestine, the womb and any free fluid in the belly. It confirms pregnancy from about day 25. It also guides a needle when a urine sample or a fluid sample is needed. Blood results from our lab are read alongside the images.
Many cases need both. A vomiting dog may have an x-ray for gas patterns and an ultrasound for the intestine wall, since cloth and plastic are often invisible on x-ray. The page on swallowed objects explains this. Neither scan sees inside the skull or the spinal cord. Those cases need CT or MRI, and the vet refers you to a hospital that has them.

Scans done in the clinic
Most scans start with a vomiting dog or a cat that fell from a balcony. X-ray and ultrasound are both done here and read with you at the same visit.

- CT and MRI referralsNeither x-ray nor ultrasound sees inside the skull or the spinal cord. A pet CT scan or MRI is booked at a hospital that has the machine, and the vet sends the images and notes ahead.

What happens at a scan visit
Walk-ins are accepted for x-ray. Ultrasound is better booked, because of the fasting.

The vet examines your animal and decides which scan answers the question. Scanning without an examination often means scanning the wrong place.

Fasting for ultrasound
8 to 12 hours beforeFood and gas in the stomach hide the organs behind them. Water stays down. If you can, stop your dog emptying his bladder just before the visit, because a full bladder is easier to see.

The ultrasound
20 to 30 minutesThe fur on the belly is clipped and gel is applied. Your animal lies on its back or side, usually awake, while a nurse holds. It does not hurt.

The x-ray
A few minutesAt least 2 views are taken at right angles. Only trained staff stay in the room, for radiation safety. A painful or frightened animal is sedated so the image is sharp the first time.

Same visitThe vet shows you the images on the screen and explains what is normal and what is not. Ask anything you want at this point.

You get a written estimate for any treatment. If the images point to something we refer, the vet tells you where and why.

After a balcony fall
A cat that lands and walks away still needs a chest x-ray. Air around the lungs and a torn diaphragm can be missed on examination and show up hours later.
Date stones and fruit pits
Date stones show faintly on x-ray. Metal, bone and gravel show clearly. Socks, plastic and string do not show, so the vet reads the gas pattern and adds ultrasound.
Concentrated urine
Indoor cats on dry food drink little, and hot months make it worse. Concentrated urine forms crystals and stones. X-ray finds most stones, and ultrasound finds the ones x-ray misses.
Rescued pregnant cats
Community cats breed all year here. Ultrasound confirms a pregnancy from about day 25. An x-ray near the end counts the kittens, so you know when the birth is finished.
Images from another clinic
Bring any earlier x-rays or reports on your phone, whether from Dubai or from abroad. Comparing old and new images often answers the question faster than a new test.
Going home after sedation
A sedated animal is sleepy for a few hours and controls its temperature poorly. Cool the car before you carry him out in summer.

08Afterwards
After a sedated scan
Most animals are awake enough to go home within 1 to 2 hours of sedation. They stay drowsy and a little unsteady for the rest of the day.
- Offer a small meal that evening and normal food the next morning
- Keep cats indoors and dogs on the lead until the next day
- Block off stairs and balconies while he is unsteady
- Call us if he is still very sleepy the next morning
