Why the diet plan comes from a vet clinic
A food shop sells bags. A pet nutrition clinic in Dubai has to weigh, score and rule out disease first, and the tools for that are in this building.
The same scales every visit
Your cat or dog is weighed on the clinic scales at each weigh-in, so a change of 200 grams is real and not a difference between two machines. Body condition is scored from 1 to 9 the same day.
The lab rules out disease before the food is blamed
Thyroid, kidney and blood sugar values are run in the in-house lab. Most results are back the same day, so a weight change with a medical cause is not treated with a diet.
Veterinary diets on the shelf
Kidney, urinary, hypoallergenic and weight-loss diets are stocked in the pharmacy inside the clinic. You leave with the bag and the grams per day written on the plan.
One consultation fee
The nutrition consultation costs AED 120, the same as any consultation. Any test the vet advises is priced in writing before it is run.

02Overview
What a diet plan is
A plan has 4 numbers. They are today's weight, the target weight, the daily calories and the grams of a named food that supply them. The vet scores body condition on a 9-point scale, where 4 to 5 is ideal. Each point above 5 is roughly 10% of extra body weight. About half of pet cats and dogs score 6 or more.
Weight loss has to be slow. The safe rate is 1 to 2% of body weight a week for a dog, and no more than 1% for a cat. A cat that stops eating for 2 to 3 days can develop fatty liver disease. No cat should be starved onto a new food. Weigh-ins every 2 to 4 weeks tell us whether to adjust the amount.
Prescription diets are medical tools. There are foods that dissolve certain bladder stones, foods that slow kidney disease in cats, and foods for allergy trials. Each suits one problem and can be wrong for another. The vet confirms the diagnosis first, usually with tests from our own lab.

Bring facts, not estimates. The plan is only as good as the numbers that go into it.

A food diary
3 days beforeWrite down everything that goes in. Include meals, treats, dental sticks, table food and what the children and the housekeeper give. Weigh the dry food on kitchen scales once, because cups lie.

Weight and scoring
The vet weighs your animal and feels the ribs, waist and spine. Muscle over the back and thighs is scored too. An old cat can be fat and losing muscle at once.

Ruling out illness
Weight gain can come from an underactive thyroid in dogs. Weight loss with a good appetite points to thyroid disease, diabetes or gut disease in cats. The vet tells you if a blood test is advised, and what it costs.

The numbers
You get daily calories, grams per meal and a treat allowance of no more than 10% of calories. If you feed wet and dry food together, the plan gives the split.

Weigh-ins
Every 2 to 4 weeksCome in and use the scales. If weight is not moving, the amount is cut by a small step. If it falls too fast, the amount goes up.

Feeding in Dubai
Summer means fewer calories
From June to September most dogs walk for 10 minutes instead of 45. Their food stays the same and their weight climbs. A cut of about 10% is a common summer adjustment. Weigh monthly and ask the vet before changing more.
Indoor cats and the full bowl
A neutered cat in a flat burns little energy. A bowl that is always full can add a kilo in a year. Measured meals, puzzle feeders and 2 play sessions of 5 minutes a day change that.
Water in the heat
Air conditioning dries the air, and cats drink little by nature. Wet food is about 75% water. Adding it helps cats prone to urinary crystals. Put water bowls away from the litter tray and refresh them twice a day.
Ramadan and late tables
Guests feed pets from the table. Grapes, raisins, onions, chocolate and cooked bones are the dangerous items. Fatty lamb and fried food can bring on pancreatitis in dogs. Tell visitors before iftar, not after.
Home cooking and raw feeding
Rice and chicken is not a complete diet. It lacks calcium and several vitamins within weeks. Raw meat thaws fast in a Dubai kitchen and grows salmonella. If you want to cook, ask for a balanced recipe first.
Moving countries
The food you use here may not be sold where you are going. Ask the vet for the closest equivalent, and carry enough to change over across 7 days.

08Afterwards
Making the plan work at home
One person in the house measures the food. Everyone else is told the treat allowance. Most plans that fail do so because 3 people each give a little extra.

- Change to a new food over 7 days, a quarter more each 2 days
- Take treats out of the daily allowance, not on top of it
- Feed cats in separate rooms if one steals from the other
- Weigh at the clinic on the same scales each time
