02Overview

What is tested, and what it tells the vet

A blood count measures red cells, white cells and platelets. It picks up anaemia, infection, inflammation and clotting problems. A biochemistry panel measures kidney values, liver enzymes, glucose, proteins and salts. Together they are the standard screen before an anaesthetic and the first step for an animal that is drinking more, losing weight or not eating.

Urine is checked with a dipstick, a concentration reading and a look at the sediment under the microscope. Stool is examined for worm eggs and Giardia. Ear swabs, skin scrapes and needle samples from lumps are stained and read on a slide. Rapid kits test cats for FIV and FeLV and puppies for parvovirus. When a kit is not sensitive enough, the vet adds a PCR test.

Tests are ordered after a consultation, never instead of one. There is no fixed price list for laboratory work, because panels differ. You get the cost in writing before the sample is taken. Tissue analysis, bacterial culture and some hormone tests go to an outside laboratory and take several days. Long-term conditions such as kidney disease in cats are followed with repeat panels, so each new result is compared with the last.

CBC test for dogs and catsA complete blood count measures red cells, white cells and platelets. It is the first test for fever, pale gums, weight loss and suspected tick fever.
Biochemistry panelKidney values, liver enzymes, glucose, proteins and electrolytes from the same blood draw. Repeated every 6 to 12 months in older animals.
Pre-anaesthetic blood testA count and a short chemistry panel taken on the morning of surgery or a dental scaling. It checks the liver and kidneys that clear the anaesthetic.

Examination

Blood sample
2 to 3 minutes
A nurse holds while the vet takes 1 to 3 ml from a front leg or the neck. A small patch of fur is clipped. Most cats and dogs tolerate it awake.

Urine sample
You can bring a fresh sample from home. For a sterile sample the vet passes a fine needle through the belly wall into the bladder. It takes seconds and is no more painful than a blood sample.

Analysis
The sample goes onto the clinic analysers. Slides are stained and read under the microscope by the vet.

Heat and kidney values

Dehydration alone pushes kidney values up on a blood test. In summer the vet reads them together with the urine concentration before calling it kidney disease.

Ticks all year

The brown dog tick is active in the UAE in every month and carries Ehrlichia. A low platelet count on a routine blood test is often the first clue, before any nosebleed or fever.

Adopting a street cat

Test a rescued cat for FIV and FeLV before she meets your own cats. Kittens under 6 months can carry their mother's FIV antibodies, so a positive result is repeated later.

Travel blood tests

Some countries ask for a rabies antibody test before entry. It has to be run by an approved outside laboratory, and some destinations add a waiting period of months. Check the rules for your destination first.

Evening fasting samples

An 8 to 12 hour fast does not have to be overnight. Feed breakfast, give nothing after it, and come in the evening. The clinic is open until 12 AM.

Urine from an indoor cat

Replace the litter with non-absorbent beads or clean aquarium gravel. Collect the urine with a syringe and bring it within 2 hours, or keep it in the fridge until you leave.

How long do blood test results take?

Routine blood counts and biochemistry run inside the clinic are usually ready during the same visit. Samples sent to an outside laboratory, such as tissue analysis, bacterial culture and some hormone tests, take several days. The vet tells you which kind yours is before the sample is taken, and phones you when an outside result arrives.

Does my cat need to fast before a blood test?

For a routine screen, an 8 to 12 hour fast is preferred but not essential, and water is always allowed. Fat from a recent meal clouds the sample and shifts glucose and some liver values. Diabetic cats and kittens under 4 months should not be fasted without advice. A sick cat is tested straight away, fed or not.

How do I collect a urine sample from my cat at home?

Empty and wash the tray, then fill it with non-absorbent litter beads or clean aquarium gravel. Once she has used it, draw up the urine with a clean syringe and put it in a clean sealed pot. Bring it within 2 hours, or keep it in the fridge and bring it the same day. About 5 ml is enough.

Why does my dog need a blood test before an anaesthetic if he looks healthy?

Because early kidney and liver disease, anaemia and low platelets give no outward signs. Anaesthetic drugs are cleared by the liver and kidneys, so a hidden problem changes which drugs and fluids are used. In a young healthy dog the test is usually normal, and that result becomes his baseline for later years.

How often should an older cat have blood tests?

Once a year from the age of about 7, and every 6 months from about 11. Kidney disease, an overactive thyroid and diabetes are common in older cats and start quietly. Blood and urine often change months before she looks unwell, when diet and treatment can do the most. Ask the vet about a blood pressure check at the same visit.
