Why have your dog neutered here
A dog spay is a longer operation than a cat spay, and a 30 kg dog needs more than a treatment room to recover in.

Bloods run in the building
Dogs over 7, short-nosed breeds and any dog with a murmur have a pre-anaesthetic panel in the in-house lab that morning. If it is not right, the operation moves and you pay for the exam only.

02Overview
What the operation is, and when to do it
Castration removes both testicles through one cut just in front of the scrotum. Spaying removes the ovaries and uterus through a cut along the midline of the belly. The male operation takes 20 to 30 minutes of surgery. The female takes 45 to 90, and longer in a deep-chested or overweight dog.
Timing depends on adult size. Small breeds are usually done at about 6 months. For large breeds, many vets now advise waiting until 12 to 18 months, when the growth plates have closed. A female is best spayed 2 to 3 months after a season has ended. Spaying removes the risk of pyometra and lowers the risk of mammary tumours.
The vet examines your dog on the morning of surgery. For dogs over 7, short-nosed breeds and any dog with a heart murmur, we advise a blood test first. It is run in our own lab before the anaesthetic. If the timing is unclear, book a consultation and the vet will set a date with you.

- Pre-anaesthetic blood test and heart checkA small sample run in the in-house lab before the first injection. Advised for dogs over 7 and all short-nosed breeds.
- Microchip and Dubai Municipality tagPlaced while your dog is asleep if he has none. Registration needs the chip number and an in-date rabies vaccine, see dog vaccination.
- Recheck, cone and the first nightThe wound recheck at 10 to 14 days is included. A dog vomiting after spay surgery more than twice on the first night is a same-day call, not a wait.
04On the day
The day, hour by hour
Times are confirmed when you book. This is the usual order.

The night before
From 10 PMNo food after the evening meal. Water stays down until the morning. Give a short walk before you leave home so your dog arrives with an empty bladder.

Drop-off
MorningYour dog is weighed and examined. You see the written estimate for that weight band and sign the consent form. Leave a phone number that you will answer.

Anaesthetic and surgery
A nurse stays with your dog from the first injection until he can lift his head. Heart rate, breathing and oxygen level are watched the whole time.

Recovery
Your dog wakes on a padded bed in a kennel and is kept warm. We call or message you once he is awake. Large dogs take longer to stand than small ones.

Pick-up
EveningA nurse shows you the wound and fits the cone. You leave with written instructions, any medication and the recheck date. Bring a second person if your dog weighs over 25 kg.

Things that are different in Dubai
Pick the month
Recovery means 10 to 14 days of short lead walks. From October to April that is easy. In July the only safe walks are before 7 AM and after sunset, on ground you have tested with your hand.
The drive home
A dog waking from an anaesthetic cannot pant well enough to cool down. Run the air conditioning for 5 minutes before you bring him out. Lay him flat on the back seat, not in the boot.
Flats, lifts and stairs
Use the lift for 2 weeks. Carry a small dog up any steps. For a large dog on a villa staircase, a towel under the belly takes weight off the wound.
Daycare and dog parks
Many Dubai daycares will not take an unneutered adult male. After surgery, keep your dog out of group play for 14 days. One jump at another dog can open the muscle layer.
Microchip and tag
A missing microchip can be placed while your dog is asleep. Dubai Municipality registration needs the chip number and a rabies vaccine that is in date.
Late pick-up
The clinic is open until 12 AM, so you can collect after work. Tell us in the morning if you will come later than 8 PM.

Most dogs are sleepy for one night and hungry by the next morning. These signs should not wait.
Phone answered 24 hours
- Blood dripping from the wound, or a belly that is swelling
- Gums that look white or grey instead of pink
- Vomiting more than twice after coming home
- A scrotum that swells to the size it was before surgery, or larger
- The wound edges have opened or something is showing between them
- No interest in food 24 hours after the operation
08Afterwards
The first two weeks at home
Give half the normal dinner on the first night. Normal meals start the next morning. Some bruising around a male's wound is common in the first 3 days and fades on its own.
The skin closes in 10 to 14 days. The muscle layer of a spayed female takes longer. Keep her calm even when she feels fine, which is usually by day 3.
- Cone or body suit on at all times, including at night
- Lead walks of 5 to 10 minutes for toileting only. No running, stairs or sofa jumps
- No bath and no swimming until the vet has checked the wound
- Look at the wound twice a day. A dry, flat line is what you want
- Come to the recheck even if everything looks fine
