Parvo is tested in the building

A puppy with diarrhoea on vaccine day is not injected. The in-house lab and PCR test for parvovirus the same day, and the inpatient ward is in the same building if he needs fluids.

02Overview

What the vaccines cover, and the puppy timetable

The combined vaccine is written DHPPiL in the vaccination book. The letters stand for distemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis. Parvovirus is the main danger for an unvaccinated puppy. It causes bloody diarrhoea and needs days of hospital care. Rabies is a separate injection, given from 12 weeks.

A puppy has the first dose at 6 to 8 weeks. It is repeated every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age. The last dose matters most, because by then the mother's antibodies have gone. A booster follows at 1 year, then yearly. Kennel cough vaccine is added for dogs that use daycare, boarding or a groomer.

The vet examines your dog before every vaccine. That check covers weight, heart, ears, skin and teeth. A dog with a fever is sent home with a new date, not an injection. If getting a large or nervous dog into the car is the problem, the vaccine can be given on a home visit.

Dog vaccination cost in Dubai depends on which of these your dog needs. Each one is priced before it is given. Say the breed and age when you book.

Puppy vaccination courseDoses at 6 to 8, 12 and 16 weeks, with rabies from 12 weeks. Puppy vaccination in Dubai starts early because most puppies from shops and breeders arrive at 8 weeks with one dose or none.
Annual DHPPiL boosterDistemper, hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis in one injection, 12 months after the puppy course and then yearly. The dog annual vaccination cost is the package price, AED 199.
Rabies vaccine for dogsFrom 12 weeks, then every year. This is the rabies vaccine for dogs Dubai Municipality checks when the tag is issued or renewed, and it is recorded against the chip number.
Kennel cough vaccineFor dogs that use daycare, boarding, training classes or a groomer. Most centres want it given at least a week before the first day, so book it early.
Pet microchipping in DubaiThe chip goes under the skin of the neck in seconds and can be done at the same visit. Registration needs the chip number and the rabies entry in the book.
Dubai Municipality tag renewal checkBring the book and your Emirates ID. The desk checks the rabies date and the chip number so the renewal is not refused for a missing entry.
Overdue boosters and unknown historyA rescue or an adult with no book is examined and started on 2 doses 3 to 4 weeks apart. Bring any paper you have, even in another language.
Worming, tick and flea treatmentPriced by weight at the desk and given at the same visit if the vet advises it. Ticks are found most often behind the ears and between the toes.
Boarding and airline paperwork checksKennels and airlines want dates that are in order. Bring the book and the flight date and the desk checks both against the rules you were given.

The visit, step by step

Before you leave home
Bring the vaccination book and your dog's lead. Carry an unvaccinated puppy from the car to the door. The ground outside any clinic is where sick dogs have walked.

Weight and examination
10 minutes
The vet checks temperature, heart, eyes, teeth, skin and belly, and looks into both ears. In puppies the vet also checks the bite, the navel and, in males, that both testicles have come down.

The injection
Under a minute
The vaccine goes under the skin of the neck or shoulder. A treat at the same moment helps. Bring one your dog likes.

The record
The vet signs the book, adds the batch sticker and writes the next due date. Dubai Municipality registration and every boarding kennel will ask for this page.

Fifteen minutes nearby
After a first vaccine, stay near the clinic for 15 minutes. Reactions are rare, and the ones that matter start early.

What is different in Dubai

The municipality tag

Every dog in Dubai has to be microchipped and registered with Dubai Municipality. The tag is renewed each year and needs a rabies vaccine that is in date.

Parks and shared lawns

Parvovirus survives in soil for months, and the heat does not clear it. Keep your puppy off community grass and out of dog parks until 1 week after the 16-week dose.

Summer daycare

From June to September many dogs spend the day in indoor daycare. That is where kennel cough spreads. Most centres want the vaccine given at least a week before the first day.

Flying out

Most countries want rabies given at least 21 days before travel, and after the microchip. Some also require a rabies antibody blood test months ahead. Check your destination before booking the flight.

Standing water and rats

Leptospirosis spreads through rat urine in puddles and irrigation run-off. Dogs walked near construction sites and landscaped verges are the ones exposed. It is covered by the yearly vaccine.

After-work visits

The clinic is open from 8 AM to 12 AM every day. Evening is kinder on paws and on the car ride in summer.

07Do not wait

A sleepy evening and a sore shoulder are normal for 24 to 48 hours. These signs are not.

08Afterwards

The two days after

Expect a quieter dog on the first evening. A small firm lump at the injection site is common and goes within 2 to 3 weeks. Kennel cough vaccine given into the nose can cause a few sneezes for 2 or 3 days.

Do not give human painkillers. Ibuprofen and paracetamol both harm dogs. If your dog seems sore, call and ask.

Short lead walks only for 24 hours, and none in the midday heat
No bath or grooming for 3 days
Normal food and plenty of water
Set a phone reminder for the next dose before you drive off

Questions about dog vaccinations

When can my puppy go for walks after vaccination?

One week after the 16-week dose. Before that, carry your puppy in public places and keep walks to your own garden or balcony. Parvovirus lives in soil and grass for months. Meeting healthy, vaccinated dogs inside a home is fine from the second dose, and it helps your puppy learn manners early.

What does the DHPPiL vaccine cover?

Five diseases: distemper, infectious hepatitis, parvovirus, parainfluenza and leptospirosis. Distemper and parvovirus kill puppies. Hepatitis damages the liver. Parainfluenza is one cause of kennel cough. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection from rat urine, and people can catch it too. Rabies is not part of DHPPiL and is given as a separate injection from 12 weeks.

Does my dog need the kennel cough vaccine?

Yes, if your dog goes to daycare, boarding, training classes or a grooming salon. Those are the places where dogs share air in a closed room. A dog that only walks with you and meets few others can skip it. Tell the vet how your dog spends the week and the decision takes a minute.

My dog's booster is overdue. Do we have to start again?

Not usually. A healthy adult dog that is a few months late has one booster and carries on yearly. If the gap is longer than about 15 months, or the puppy course was never finished, the vet may advise 2 doses 3 to 4 weeks apart. Bring the old vaccination book so the dates are clear.

What do I need to register my dog with Dubai Municipality?

A microchip number and a rabies vaccine that is in date, both recorded in the vaccination book. Bring your Emirates ID as well. The tag is renewed every year, so most owners time the renewal with the annual booster visit. Ask at the desk on the day and we will check the book is complete.
