01Overview

When a second opinion makes sense

Owners ask for one in four situations. A major operation has been advised. The diagnosis is serious, such as cancer or organ failure. Treatment has run for weeks without improvement. Or two quotes differ widely and you want to know why. All four are reasonable, and no good vet is offended by the request.

There are three possible outcomes. We agree with the first vet, and you go back with more confidence. We agree with the diagnosis but see another treatment option. Or we think a test is missing and say which one. Often the answer is that the first plan was sound, and hearing it twice has value.

Most second opinions concern soft-tissue surgery, orthopedic cases or unclear x-ray and ultrasound findings. It is booked as a consultation. You are free to have the treatment here, at the first clinic or anywhere else.

How to ask for one, step by step

The more of the file the vet sees, the more useful the opinion.

Ask the first clinic for the file
A few days before
Request the clinical notes, lab reports, and the x-ray or ultrasound images. You do not have to give a reason. Ask for the original image files by email, not a phone photo of a screen.

Send it ahead
Message the clinic on WhatsApp to book, and send the files or email them to info@petflixvet.com. Add a list of current medicines with the amounts and times you give them.

Write down your questions
Three is a good number. For example: is surgery the only option, what happens if we wait a month, and what would you do if this were your dog.

The appointment
30 to 40 minutes
The vet takes the history again in your words, then examines your pet from nose to tail. Findings sometimes change between two visits, and that alone can explain two different opinions.

The answer
You are told which parts of the first plan we agree with, which we would do differently, and why. If we cannot tell without another test, we say that too, and name the test and its cost.

What you leave with
A summary you can take back to your first vet. If you ask for treatment here, you get a written quote. Nothing is booked at the appointment unless you ask for it.

Records from another country

Many owners arrive in Dubai with a pet that has a long history abroad. Bring everything, in any language. Lab values and images read the same everywhere, and we translate the rest with you.

Images on WhatsApp

Clinics here often share x-rays as compressed WhatsApp pictures. Detail is lost. Ask for the DICOM or full-size JPEG files by email or on a USB stick.

Two quotes that do not match

Prices for the same operation vary widely across Dubai. Often the quotes cover different things. Bring both. We go through them line by line: blood test, anaesthetic, implants, nights, rechecks.

Pet insurance

Pet insurance is sold in the UAE, and an insurer may ask for a report or a second opinion before major surgery. Bring the policy and the claim form. The vet can complete the clinical section at the appointment.

Before a long trip

Owners often want a decision before summer travel. Book at least 2 weeks ahead of the flight, so there is time for a test or an operation and the first recheck.

Evening appointments

The clinic is open 8 AM to 12 AM every day. A second opinion works well at a quiet evening slot, when both owners can come and hear the same explanation.

Questions about second opinions

Will my regular vet be upset if I get a second opinion?

A good vet will not be. Second opinions are routine in veterinary medicine, and most vets have asked for one on their own cases. Asking for your pet's file is your right, and you do not have to say why. If we agree with your vet, we tell you so, and you can return there with no awkwardness.

Do I have to repeat all the tests for a second opinion?

No. We use the results you bring whenever they are recent and readable. A test is repeated only if it is out of date, the image quality is too poor to judge, or the vet thinks a different test would answer the question. You hear the reason and the price first, and you decide.

What should I bring to a second opinion appointment?

Bring the clinical notes, blood and urine results, x-ray and ultrasound images as files, and any biopsy report. Add the medicines in their boxes, the food your pet eats, and the quote you were given. Sending the files on WhatsApp or to info@petflixvet.com the day before gives the vet time to read them.

What if you disagree with the first vet?

We tell you what we would do differently and the reasoning behind it, without criticising the other clinic. Two competent vets can read the same case differently, especially early in an illness. Where the evidence is thin, we say so. The decision stays with you, and you can take our summary back to your first vet.

If I get a second opinion from you, do I have to have the surgery at Petflix?

No. The consultation fee of AED 120 is the whole cost unless you choose further tests. Many owners return to their own vet with our summary. If you want the operation here, you get a written quote first. If the case is outside what we do, we tell you and suggest the type of hospital to look for.
